Yes. As of August 2026, Anthropic embeds an invisible, machine-readable watermark in text generated by Claude.

The watermark is not visible to readers and Anthropic says it does not change how the writing reads. It is designed to survive being copied and pasted, and it may survive some editing.

What the Claude watermark is

A machine-readable signal woven into the generated text itself.

  • Invisible to the human eye

  • Applied at the model level, so it covers every Claude product

  • Travels with the text when copied and pasted

  • For files, Anthropic uses the C2PA open standard

It applies to models released after 2 August 2026, and Anthropic has said it will extend support to older models.

Why Anthropic added it

To comply with the EU AI Act. Anthropic signed the Article 50(2) Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, which requires providers of generative AI to mark their output so it can be identified as machine-generated.

The rule is European, but the watermark applies globally. It does not matter where you live or where you use Claude. More on what those rules mean for you.

How it differs from AI detection

AI detectors make a guess. Tools like Turnitin and GPTZero analyse writing patterns and produce a probability. They can be wrong in both directions, which is why Turnitin’s own guidance says its score should not be the sole basis for a decision.

A watermark is a lookup. The mark is either present or it is not. There is no percentage and no interpretation.

That difference matters if you have ever been on the wrong end of a false positive. A watermark says something narrow, that text passed through a particular model, rather than guessing about your writing style.

What the watermark does not prove

  • It does not prove who wrote something

  • It does not prove intent, or that any rule was broken

  • It shows that text was processed by a Claude model, and nothing more

Text can pass through an AI model for many legitimate reasons: translation, accessibility, grammar checking, or reformatting your own writing.

What is still unknown

Honest answer: quite a lot, this early.

  • How much editing removes the mark is not publicly documented

  • Whether schools, publishers, or detection tools can check for it is unclear

  • Whether other model providers will follow is unknown

We will update this page as details are confirmed. Last checked 12 August 2026.

What this means for your writing

If you use AI anywhere in your process, the useful habits have not changed:

  • Know your school or employer’s actual policy on AI assistance

  • Keep drafts and version history that show your process

  • Read anything you submit and make sure it says what you mean

  • Check your writing before you submit it, so nothing surprises you

How Lunchbreak fits in

Lunchbreak is built for the step before you submit: seeing how your writing reads, and fixing what does not sound like you.

The AI checker runs your text against major AI detectors in one place and shows the result from each. Detectors frequently disagree, and seeing that spread is more useful than one number in isolation. It is free with an account.

The humanizer rewrites text for tone, flow, and sentence rhythm so it reads naturally instead of stiff and machine-like. You compare the draft against the rewrite side by side and edit what you keep.

On watermarks specifically: rewriting changes the text. What that does to an embedded watermark is not something anyone has established publicly yet, including us. Anthropic has not documented it. We will say something concrete when we can test it properly.
